The Case for Age Diversity in the Workplace

Most conversations about workplace diversity focus on race, gender, and background — age rarely makes the list, despite being one of the most consistently overlooked sources of both bias and untapped value.

It's also the law

In the US, employers are legally prohibited from treating applicants over 40 less favorably because of their age, and from allowing age-based harassment in the workplace. Younger workers have less formal federal protection, but research shows bias against younger employees is just as common in practice — it just gets less attention.

What a genuinely multi-generational team gets right

Companies that avoid age-diverse teams miss out on a straightforward advantage: different generations bring different strengths, and multi-generational teams consistently show higher productivity and lower turnover than teams clustered around a single age group. Older employees often bring deep institutional knowledge and long-standing networks; younger employees often bring fresh approaches and comfort with newer tools. Neither is a substitute for the other.

Where the bias actually shows up

It's rarely as obvious as an explicit comment. It shows up in job postings that signal a preference (“great for a recent grad,” language that only makes sense for someone early in their career), in screening that filters by graduation date, and in assumptions baked into interview questions — asking about retirement timelines, or assuming a candidate with an older email provider is behind on technology.

What actually helps

  • Cross-generational mentoring, in both directions
  • Explicit awareness training on generational bias, not just general D&I training
  • Apprenticeship and re-entry programs open to workers of any age
  • Recruiting deliberately across age groups, not defaulting to whoever a pipeline happens to surface

The strongest teams tend to be the ones that treat every generation as bringing something the others don't — not a hierarchy to navigate, but a genuine advantage when it's built in deliberately.
